The Emotional, Behavioural and Social Development supports all schools in being inclusive places for all children and young people to learn and develop emotionally. The Service supports groups of children or young people, staff and parents, providing targeted support to individual children and young people and promoting multi-agency working.

THE LOXLEY CENTRE

The Loxley Centre is Sutton’s secondary pupil referral unit based at Sutton West. The Centre is based in newly refurbished buildings and shares accommodation with the Behaviour Support team. The Centre offers individual programmes of education to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students who have been excluded from secondary school. The Centre also offers respite and support programmes to students at risk of permanent exclusion from school.

Head of Centre: Renee Bull

THE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT TEAM
The cross phase Behaviour Support Team has the role of supporting the LEA and primary and secondary schools in achieving the aim of inclusion. We work in a range of ways to support schools, children and young people and their families. Here are examples of work undertaken:

  • We support schools in reviewing and developing their Behaviour Policy and in developing policies on bullying.
  • We run training courses for whole-school staff on understanding and managing emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  • Mid-day Supervisor Training. We have worked in several schools to support midday teams in understanding and managing behaviour, including dealing with conflict, and games workshops.
  • We work alongside class teachers in supporting them to develop strategies for managing and responding to behaviour. This may involve observing how the dynamics of the classroom affects the behaviour of individuals or groups of children.
  • We work with groups of children and young people who are experiencing difficulties in school because of poor social skills, low self-esteem or inability to manage anger or other emotions.
  • We can arrange group sessions for children who may need some extra support over and above normal transitional liaison on moving from Nursery to Year 1, Year 2 to Year 3 and primary to secondary school.
  • We have facilitated support groups for parents of children, which include discussions about home-school communication, and ways in which parents can support children by applying consistent boundaries and rewards for behaviour.
