European links - Twin Towns
Sutton has well established links with four European towns: Gagny, a suburb of Paris; Gladsaxe (a suburb of Copenhagen) in Denmark; Minden in Germany and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Berlin. It also has a friendship link with Tavernelle, near Florence in Italy.

The Borough's first European ties were established in 1968 and since then a developing programme has served to strengthen these international links. Many of the events are sponsored by the Council which is anxious that exchange visits and similar projects should involve all citizens of all towns, with civic dignitaries playing a minor role.
The emphasis is increasingly on youth. Schoolchildren's visits, home-to-home exchanges, parties of visiting students, sports competitions and international children's 'villages' all play a part in enabling young people from Sutton to visit their linked towns in Europe and bring their opposite numbers to the Borough. Although the accent is on youth, the older generation are not forgotten. Some of the events are organised by the Sutton Town Twinning Association.
