Sutton Ecology Centre Eco Code
At Sutton Ecology Centre we try to reduce our impact on the world we all live in by following these simple guidelines:
-We recycle all glass, cans, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, foil and wood
-We compost all food and garden waste (and use it as organic fertiliser).
-We re-use resources wherever possible e.g. scrap paper for notes and draft printing, re-using envelopes, craft activities with scrap materials and packaging.
-We reduce waste by buying second hand or recycled goods whenever possible.
-We think about the effect our shopping has on the world and on other people. We buy timber guaranteed to come from well managed forests (certified by the Forest Stewardship Council) and fairly traded products where possible (for example tea and coffee). We avoid buying products containing harmful chemicals or with excessive packaging.
-We waste less water by reporting leaks etc. quickly and using collected rainwater for as much of the garden as possible. Our toilets and urinals are designed to use less water.
-We waster less energy by turning off lights, using low energy bulbs and light reflectors, switching off equipment when it is not needed and keeping external doors shut.
-We use the centre grounds carefully, respecting the plants and animals, growing organically and encouraging visitors to take their litter home.
-We use the most environmentally friendly method of travel possible The minibus used by Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers runs on gas and the vans used by Meals on Wheels are being replaced by electric ones as funding becomes available.
-For other journeys we aim to walk, cycle or use public transport. Where using a car is unavoidable we use a car from a car pool many of which run on cleaner fuels such as electricity or gas.
-We spread the word to our community by holding open days, encouraging volunteers, news letters, consultation and being a source of education, information and advice.
-We encourage our visitors to read our Eco Code and realise that if we can do these things then they may be able to do most of them too!
