Voluntary Office Work
Volunteer work in the office is less available, but we do occasionally need help, for instance with publicity, fund-raising and events organisation. So, if you are interested in helping and/or have a few ideas, do let us know so that we can involve you at the appropriate time. We all get caught up in envelope-stuffing from time to time!
Usually most of the people who have volunteered in our office have started out as either education or grounds volunteers and gradually taken on more of administrative and planning side of their area as they get to know how the centre runs.
If you are particularly interested in the way that information is put across to the public, or have some artistic talent, you may like to help us with the outdoors information needs of the Centre. (This is sometimes called ‘interpretation’ - interpreting an area rather than a language). We sometimes need to update our information in the grounds or the building, so there is usually the opportunity to get involved in some way. We also occasionally need help with our Library and Reception area, for example, filing magazines, checking and re-stocking leaflets.
Previous tasks undertaken by office based volunteers:
Helping with mail-outs filing in the library checking and re-stocking leaflets in reception. designing signs to explain features of the grounds to the public.
Personal qualities useful in an office volunteer:
Most tasks require a reasonable level of literacy (but we are good at finding ways to involve everyone who wishes to help by taking into account individual abilities). An interest in nature and sustainability issues good communication skills common sense!
In the past volunteers have used the experience they gained to:
Get work experience leading to paid employment in the environmental sector Get paid employment as a fund-raiser for a charitable organisation. decide to go on a college course on countryside management.
