The London Borough of Sutton has a great reputation for being cleaner and greener. Our residents have achieved the best recycling rates in London, we have some great community involvement in areas like local food growing and we have the country’s first sustainable community, at Bedzed in Hackbridge.
Now we are setting our sights on the next twenty years. Our new Environmental Sustainability Strategy (
PDF - 168 KB) was launched on Sunday 5 June - World Environment Day.

Save Water
Sutton residents are within the region where the first Drought Order for 11 years has come into force. The South East is facing a period of drought, which is due to several factors. We have had a second winter with little rainfall, and groundwater levels are now very low. This is compounded by the growing population trend in the south east, and our increasing demands for water. The Council is working to save water in its operations. We cut water usage by 17% last year with efficiency measures and we are only using recycled 'grey' water for any parks or planting needs. Everyone can do their bit this summer with simple measures to save water at home - such as not leaving the tap running when brushing teeth, or in the garden by using mulches, water butts and drought-friendly plants. More details on water saving tips, water butt offer and the Drought Order rules are available on the Sutton and East Surrey water company web site. Thank you Sutton!
Congratulations to Lisa Ryan-Ashton and her daughter Bronte, who were the 1000th household to make the Planet Pledge. They were congratulated at Westcroft Leisure Centre by Helen Woolston, the Council's Environmental Sustainability Manager Sutton’s Planet Pledge… action Today for a Better Tomorrow.
Make Three Pledges Today!
Sutton is proud of its reputation as a cleaner, greener borough but we want to build on this and take our performance to the next level. We are therefore aiming to get at least 1,000 households in the borough signed up to our new ‘Sutton's Planet Pledge'. This is where we can make 3 pledges to make improvements in our lifestyle, that together add up to some big changes! We are also offering information, support, and incentives to help our pledgers.
The Mayor was our first Citizen to sign up on 5 June!
