Sutton recycles 33% of its household waste and as one of the best performers in London is committed to recycling 45% by 2010. Recycling makes better use of our natural resources and with waste impacting on climate change, we need to think globally and act locally to recycle as much as possible. Even better than recycling is reducing the amount of waste that we create in the first place or getting as much of it as possible re-used. Some tips for reducing your waste are listed on the waste Minimisation Section of this website.
Sutton provides a fortnightly kerbside collection using green wheeled bins for dry recyclables: all paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminium and steel cans. The materials are taken to our Materials Recycling Facility where they are sorted and then sold on to reprocessors to make new products. The Council also offers a fortnightly charged collection service for garden waste.
A network of Neighbourhood Recycling Centres and hundreds of other smaller recycling points in blocks of flats, schools etc. provide recycling facilities for paper, plastic bottles, cans, textiles and shoes.
The Council’s Reuse and Recycling Centre in Kimpton Park Way has additional facilities for cardboard, wood, scrap metal, engine oil, aluminium foil, garden waste, TVs, computers, pairs of spectacles, toner cartridges etc. For more information please view our dedicated web page: Reuse & Recycling Centre (Kimpton Park Way).
For more information on recycling check out the following websites: Waste Watch at www.wasteonline.org.uk and for a list of other organisations you can contact please go to: www.capitalwastelearning.com.
