     Recycle Now Home Composters

Our overall goal is to reduce the costs associated with collecting and processing garden waste and to spend the money saved on other services you have told us you want. The best place to dispose of garden waste is at source – at home. It helps reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we produce – our ‘carbon footprint’ – as there will be fewer lorries collecting the waste, furthermore compost is good for your garden.

To encourage all households to compost, the council and Recycle Now are working together to offer you a free compost bin. Recycle Now is the national recycling campaign, implemented and managed by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) on behalf of the Government.

There is a choice of two sizes of bin – 220 and 330 litres:

• The 220 litre bin is 90cm high and 74cm wide.
• The 330 litre bin is 100cm high and 70cm wide.

Your first bin is free. Further bins are available at a subsidised price – £17 for 220 litre bins or £20 for 330 litre bins, including delivery.
To help take your vegetable peelings, teabags and egg shells and all other compostables to the garden, kitchen caddies are also available to order at a discounted cost of £4 each.

Recycle Now is the national recycling campaign, implemented and managed by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) on behalf of the Government.

WRAP works in partnership with businesses, industry and local authorities- encouraging and enabling businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.

Home composting is not a new idea. It is a natural process that is occurring in nature all the time. Sutton Council encourages residents to compost their non-cooked vegetable waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings and their garden waste at home, because the resulting soil conditioner or compost is good for the garden.

Home made compost is rich in plant nutrients, improves the soil structure and helps your plants fight back against pests and diseases. It’s easy to do.

For faster composting: 1-3 months

  • Chop plant waste into small pieces
  • Keep damp
  • Alternate layers
  • Aerate the composter if possible
  • Keep the bin moist

More leisurely composting: 3-6 months and beyond

  • Just keep adding to the bin
  • Sprinkle with water on occasions
