Street Cleansing
Street Cleansing Services include: street cleaning, graffiti removal, flytip removal, highways drain cleaning and weeding.
Sutton's has reintrodued a fortnightly 'Beat Sweep', rather than the borough-wide ‘team sweep’ arrangement we had used previously. The beat sweep system allows the sweeper to get to know their areas better and provide an improved service. The beat sweep areas are arranged to fit as well as possible with the new six local committees. We have also introduced an extra service, 'The Deep Clean', where a dedicated, multi discplinary team undertake a range of additional cleansing tasks.
Each Street Cleansing area has a dedicated street cleaning supervisor and an area response team to help with clearing flytips and other rubbish left on the roads.
These changes should ensure that Sutton meets the Government’s grading standard, (this link opens in a new window) which monitors the cleanliness of Sutton's streets.
There are four grades, A to D: Grade A means there is no litter or refuse in the street. Grade D is the worst and means that the street is still heavily littered with significant rubbish. The Council aims to clean its streets to the Grade A standard. The Street Cleaning standards that we work to are set out in The Environmental Protection Act 1990 (s.89), (this link opens in a new window).
