Waste Collection & Disposal
"As a society, we are consuming natural resources at an unsustainable rate. If every country consumed natural resources at the rate the UK does, we would need three planets to live on." Waste Strategy for England, 2007
The Waste Hierarchy
- Waste Prevention
- Re-Use
- Recycle/Compost
- Energy Recovery
- Disposal

Sutton Council is committed to recycling 45% by 2010. The government has set all councils landfill reduction targets for biodegradable waste such as food, garden waste and paper. Working with our partners, the London boroughs of Croydon, Merton and Kingston and with our commercial partners, Sita and Viridor, we have commissioned a special mechanical biological treatment facility, (MBT) that separates and composts the food waste. We are able to put 33,000 tonnes of our brown bin waste through this facility. Metals found in the brown bins are recovered for recycling.
The MBT facility has been operating since 0ctober 2006 and to make the process more efficient and reduce the impact our waste has on climate change we are considering an additional feature called anaerobic digestion to capture the gases arising from the food waste to create energy.
