Sutton is an appealing mix of town and country, combining the charm of the old with the best of modern life. Known as "The Greener, Cleaner Borough", with a tree as its logo, Sutton is just 25 minutes from central London by train. Gatwick Airport to the south is a 30-minute drive and the M25 and M23 are easily accessible. It is a borough of intriguing contrasts, from the north where it has many of the characteristics of inner London with areas of significant deprivation to its southern boundaries where it borders open fields and the North Downs. Sutton's 180,000-strong community benefits from a vibrant economy and a quality of life that has attracted many major employers. Unemployment is a low, with jobs locally mainly in the service area, professional, light industrial and retail sectors. The borough has a substantial population of commuters. Its prosperity is evident in booming shopping centres and in the district centres of Cheam, North Cheam, Worcester Park, Rose Hill, Carshalton and Wallington.
From April 2006, with the transfer of housing management to the Council’s arms-length management organisation, Sutton Housing Partnership, all remaining housing and housing related functions are grouped within a newly configured Strategic Housing Services division, forming part of the Adult Social Services and Housing Group.
Strategic Housing Services’ functions fall into three broad areas:
The Housing Centre -responsible principally for the operations of homelessness, the housing register, housing advice, home ownership and community support
Housing Partnerships - responsible for strategies and plans, Supporting People, housing enabling, performance management across the housing function as a whole, managing the contract with Sutton Housing Partnership and the wider partnership agenda with health and other statutory and voluntary agencies, as well as the SW London housing sub-region.
Housing Regeneration - responsible for the major projects at Roundshaw in Wallington and Durand Close, Carshalton.
