Community Occupational Therapy Service
Community Occupational Therapists (OTs) are professionally trained to support people with disabilities to achieve maximum independence in their own homes.
The role of the Community Occupational Therapy Service is to offer assessment and practical recommendations to residents within Sutton who have physical disabilities. What we do and the recommendations we make are varied as no two people are the same. However our overall aim is to enable individuals to carry out everyday tasks with increased independence and safety.
To do this we tend to focus on overcoming physical difficulties within the home through the provision of equipment and adaptations. These can range from small pieces of equipment to help with domestic tasks in the kitchen to major structural building alterations to allow disabled access throughout a home.
All recommendations are based on an individual's needs and it is or responsibility to ensure the recommendations we give make the most appropriate and necessary use of resources available to our service.
What We Don't Do
Whilst we work closely with our colleagues in the health service we do not assess or provide equipment / adaptations for individuals who are due to go into or are in hospital. If you find yourself in this circumstance please contact either your GP or the hospital / primary care service that will be caring for you. There is some support and information available for people who are leaving hospital.
If you need an assessment for walking sticks, zimmer frames or a wheel chair please contact your local physiotherapy service via your GP.
Buying Equipment
You do not have to work through the council to receive equipment that may make your life easier, there are many shops that will sell you daily living equipment and mobility products independently. Look in your local business directory or visit the Disabled Living Website [Note: this links to an external website] for more information.
You may also be eligible for a grant to help buy equipment from The British Legion or The Multiple Sclerosis Society [Note: these link to external websites].
