Sutton Summer Festival

Sutton's Summer Festival 2012 incorporating Take Part Take Pride

A wonderful summer of fun for all the family.

This year, thanks to the great community spirit that abounds in Sutton, local people and organisations will be putting on a host of great events and get-togethers in celebration of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and Paralympics and Take Part Take Pride to create one big summer festival of fun!

Our summer festival will start in May and continue right through to September. Here are just some of the events we've got coming up.

If you have any new events you'd like to tell us about email: summerfestival@sutton.gov.uk

Cheam Charter Fair - Saturday 19 May

The Charter fair is thought to date back to 1259 when Henry III granted Cheam a charter making it a town. There will be a parade from St Dunstan's Church to Park Road to open a market of stalls from local charities, businesses and societies. The fair is steeped in custom, with traders traditionally marking out their stalls with chalk the night before. Historic records dating back to the 1800s prove a fairground accompanied the market. This year the Fair is being held on the Feast Day of St Dunstan's. For more information visit www.cheamcharterfair.org.uk

The Big Lunch will also be encouraging residents to host a street party on 3 June. It's expected that a record number of people will take part in street parties across the capital. To show our support, the council has agreed to waive the road closure fee and reduce bureaucracy, so if you are planning a street party or Big Jubilee Lunch, please complete the road closure booking form below by Friday 4 May: More information on road closures is available from Peter Loveday on 020 8770 6046, or through emailing traffic.postbook@sutton.gov.uk

The Big Lunch
The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.

Last year on Sunday 5th June the best part of two million people took part. in 2012 The Big Lunch falls on the same weekend as The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Sunday 3rd June and as announced by Buckingham Palace The Big Jubilee Lunch will be a part of the main programme of events over the central weekend of the Diamond Jubilee. A record number of people are expected to take part. Why not be one of them!
