Local Committees

Welcome to the Local Committee home page, where you can find out all the information you need to know on local committees in your area.

What are Local Committees?

In September 2007 Sutton adopted six Local Committees, each covering between two and four wards (Sutton has a total 18 wards). Each committee meets up to six times per year and discusses local issues occurring in the area.  The committees are chaired by a local ward councillor, and the work is supported by a Lead Officer and Area Co-ordinator from the Council.  We encourage residents to put forward ideas and attend these meetings so they can find out about what developments are occurring in their area.

Local Committees are Sutton's way of encouraging our residents to get more involved in decisions affecting local services and the development of their local community.  Our residents are an important source of information to us.  By working closely with councillors both inside and outside of meetings, residents can help to identify the issues that are most important to local people, discuss ways to address these issues and influence how public services are provided.  You can find out more information about the Local Committees in the leaflet at the bottom of this page, including why they were set up, what issues they discuss and who the chairs are.

Where are the Local Committees?

Local committee meetings are held in local venues such as schools, church halls and residents associations.  Most committees offer refreshments on arrival and all of the buildings are wheelchair accessible and equipped with induction loops.  The meetings aim to be informal and welcoming to members of the public.  Below you can find links to the six Local Committees in Sutton, where you can find out further details on where and when the meetings are held.

What's been happening at the Local Committees?

Over the last two years Local Committees have had many exciting developments.

  • Residents have been putting forward and discussing projects identified as eligible for local (public realm) funding across the borough.  This has included replacing old playground equipment, purchasing new benches and fencing, investing in new sports equipment and installing traffic calming measures, all in areas that have been important to local residents.  You can find out further details and updates on these projects in Sutton Scene.

  • Local residents have organised petitions on matters of importance, and in some cases they have given presentations and led discussions at their Local Committee.  At the Sutton Local Committee residents led important discussions about closing a local park toilet, and have successfully helped to identify a solution.  In the St Helier, the Wrythe and Wandle Valley a local business owner raised concerns about changes to parking bays, and successfully negotiated an alternative parking area.

  • Local Committees have discussed ideas to put forward under the new Sustainable Communities Act, which aims to give more local power to councils to undertake activities to promote the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the local area.

You can find a complete list of council minutes either on the Committee Dates or via the links to the local committee pages below.

How can you get involved?

There are many ways in which you can get involved with your Local Committee:

  • Attend your local committee meetings: All members of the public are welcome and you can attend the whole meeting, or if you would rather, you can drop in and hear those items that are of particular interest to you.  Agendas are available a few days before the meeting and you will be able to view these online on the committee minutes page

  • Put forward suggestions for topics to be discussed at your local committee:  You can do this by filling out the online feedback form (printable version available below), by emailing your suggestions to democratic services (democratic.services@sutton.gov.uk) or by contacting your local ward councillor.

  • Become a Community Representative: if you are a member of a friends of park group, tenants or residents association you may qualify for this status. You can find out more about this role, and about the event we put on for the representatives on the Community Representatives' Page.  You can find out who the Community Representatives are in your area by going to the Local Committee pages (links below).  If you think you qualify to be a Community Representative and would like to apply for this status, you can fill out an pdf icon application form [52kb] or contact democratic services for an informal chat (democratic.services@sutton.gov.uk).

  • Register your details at the link attached or via the online form below:  By registering your email address we can email you the latest agendas and you can stay in contact with developments affecting your local committee.
