Elections - postal votes
This page tells you how you can still vote if you are unable to go to your polling station on election day. You may vote by post on demand.
When to apply
Ask the Electoral Registration Officer (020 8770 4888) for an application form as soon as an election has been announced, if you know that you will not be able to vote in person. The Electoral Registration Officer is based at the Civic Offices, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, Surrey.
The Electoral Registration Officer must receive your completed application form by 5.00 pm, eleven working days before election day. (Working days exclude weekends, bank holidays, Good Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). This leaves very little time after an election is announced so you must complete and return your form as quickly as possible.
Below, you can download a form to print and return to:
Electoral Registration Department,
Civic Offices,
St Nicholas Way,
Sutton,
Surrey,
SM1 1EA.
Please read the notes below before completing the form.
Download an Application form to vote by post [12kb] (PDF - 16 KB)
Please complete the form following the guidelines below:
- Enter your name and address
- You need to decide if you wish to have a postal vote:
- for all elections until you tell us otherwise
- for elections that you already know are held on a particular date
- for all elections held between two dates (you may be on holiday or otherwise unable to vote at a polling station between these dates). - You can choose to vote by post at all types of elections, for parliamentary elections only, or for local elections only. If you are unsure, then we would recommend that you choose to vote at 'All' elections as you may lose your vote for one type of election if multiple elections are held on the same day.
- If you will be away from home, then you can choose to have your ballot papers sent to an address other than the one shown in Section 1.
- You must sign the form, otherwise it will be returned to you.
If you need any further guidance then please contact the staff in Electoral Services.
After you have filled in the Postal form
Make sure you have signed and dated the form and then post it (or take it by hand) to your electoral registration officer, at the address below, without delay. Upon receipt of your application it will be acknowledged. Whilst the Electoral Registration Officer prefers to receive the original application form for postal or proxy voting, he will accept a scanned attachment or fax.
To contact Sutton's Electoral Registration Officer telephone 020 8770 4888 during normal office hours, email vote@sutton.gov.uk or write to: Civic Offices, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, Surrey, SM1 1EA.
