Libraries
Sutton has a famous library service which has been an inspiration for libraries the world over. In 1995 Sutton Central Library became the first in the country to offer its full range of services on a Sunday. This popular initiative helped to explain why, in the same year, Sutton's library service achieved one of the Government's prestigious Charter Marks in recognition of the excellent service it provides. In 2000 a Best Value review was carried out and the library service achieved a double three star assessment as an ‘excellent service with excellent prospects for improvement’. For the year 2002/3 Sutton achieved Beacon Council status for the theme of ‘libraries as a community resource’. This award recognises centres of excellence in service areas which have a direct impact on local people’s quality of life and Sutton was one of only eight library services across the country to have achieved it.
Sutton Library Service provides a wide range of services and materials to borrow including books and information on all subjects; music scores, spoken word and recorded music; DVDs and videos; an extensive events and activities programme for both adults and children; and a community information database. There are study facilities at all libraries together with free access to the Internet. The Local Studies Centre is located at Sutton Library. The library service is provided through a network of nine libraries located throughout the borough. The Public Mobile library serves those areas of the borough not within easy reach of a static library. A library service to housebound people is also provided. This includes the Homecare Mobile library which visits residential homes, sheltered housing and Council day centres.
