Sutton’s cash boost for new library and community centre
Big Lottery Fund success

The London Borough of Sutton is to receive over £1.4million from the Big Lottery Fund to build a new two-storey library and community centre at Middleton Circle.

The design of the new library aims to be a high quality, eco-friendly and accessible landmark that everyone can enjoy. The new library will include an IT Training Centre, Reader’s Lounge as well as space for events, performances, exhibitions and meetings.

Cllr Graham Tope, executive member for libraries and heritage, said: “This is a huge boost for Sutton and for the local Middleton Circle community. The new library and community centre will go beyond traditional libraries in terms of service. It will be a place where people can develop a sense of community belonging and pride, as well as a space where people can learn.”

Sutton is nationally recognised as having one of the best public library services in the country. It was one of the first local authorities to introduce self service RFID wireless technology which allows people to borrow and return books themselves, cutting queues and giving staff more time to help their customers.

Angela Fletcher, Head of Libraries and Heritage,  said : “We are delighted to have succeeded in our bid. It has been a marvellous effort from the local community and we couldn’t have done it without their support.”

The new library will be built on the existing site and the anticipated opening date is Dec 2009. Work will start on site by Oct 2008.
