Positive Futures

What is Positive Futures?

Positive Futures is a sports based inclusion project that was initiated by the Home Office but has recently moved to Crime Concern.  The aim of the project is to use sport to reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and drug misuse amongst 10 – 16 year olds living within the Northern Wards.

There are hundreds of projects throughout the country, all providing different activities as part of their programmes.  The Sutton project began in 2002, providing many young people with positive activities.

Why Sport?

The vision of Positive Futures is to increase the range of sports activities locally.  By engaging young people in sport and other leisure activities, it provides an alternative to ‘hanging around’ and being at risk from involvement youth offending and drug misuse.  This is done by increasing awareness of drug related issues, preventative measures and support networks.

How is the project funded?

Most of the funding comes from the Home Office.  Other partners at a local level also give small amounts to support the project.  For special projects run throughout the year, Sutton Positive Futures secures funding from its local partners such as Sutton DAT, PAYP (Positive Activities for Young People) and Housing Associations.

How does Positive Futures work?

Sutton Positive Futures has two ways in which young people can get involved.  The first is just by turning up at one of our sessions.  Most of our sessions are free of charge so as long as you’re between the ages of 10-16, live on the northern wards, i.e. The Wrythe, St. Helier & Wandle Valley, and want to have a go at one of the activities, then come along.  (Please note that on your first session you will be asked to complete a form including basic details).  The second way is by being referred.  When a young person is referred to Positive Futures a member of the team will arrange a meeting with that young person to provide one-to-one support.  Referrals are taken from a number of agencies.
