Sutton strikes a winner with World Cup school dinners 25.06.10
World Cup-themed meals are being served up in Sutton's schools for the England football matches.
With every game, the children have been enjoying traditional English food as well as native dishes from the country of the opposing team.
When England played Slovenia this week the options were: Rooney's roast pork and gravy or Bosanki's Perogi bake (cheese and potato bake) served on-side with Capello's carrots; Koren's Prazeno Rdeco Zelje (red cabbage) or Ferdinand's football potatoes; followed by Stevie G's strawberries and Shaun Wright-Phillips' shortbread.
The pupils had previously enjoyed Howard's vegetarian hot dogs with onions, Meghni's meat balls and Ziani's orange and mango smoothie in honour of the team's other group opponents, the USA and Algeria.
Cllr Kirsty Jerome, Executive Member for Education and Schools at Sutton Council, said: "This is a fun way to get children interested in eating different types of food as well as learning about other cultures. The excitement surrounding the World Cup has created a buzz in the kitchens and dining halls of Sutton's schools."
James Garland, 11, from Manor Park Primary School, said: "The world cup meals are really good. I liked the hotdogs we had for the game against the USA."
