Big ideas about the Big Society 14.12.10

What does the Big Society mean to you? That's the question Sutton Council is asking residents in a bid to involve even more residents in its work.

Local people are being asked to share views and opinions which will help to shape council policy through the Speak out Sutton section of its website.

The discussion about the role which the Big Society could play in Sutton is already attracting a series of comments and suggestions, including ideas about how to keep Sutton running in snowy weather an innovative new service to enable people to lend their books to each other.  However, Sutton Council is keen to get as many people involved as possible.

Cllr Sean Brennan, Leader of Sutton council and Big Society champion, said: "At the core of the Big Society is localism – moving more power away from central government to local communities and working with them to deliver services. This website is the perfect example of this aim as it uses the views of local people to provide the fuel for us to launch more initiatives and deliver this goal."

Residents can put forward their own ideas on how Sutton should develop its four Big Society projects as well as commenting and voting on suggestions put forward by other people.

The four Big Society projects are aimed at

  • giving residents greater influence over transport decisions
  • giving local residents in Hackbridge a real say over the future of the area
  • developing Sutton's young people to be community leaders by using the new Life Centre as a hub
  • involving residents in work with local health partners to shape future services
