Team Sutton set to launch 11.02.11
Sports clubs and members of the public are being invited to attend the official launch of Team Sutton, which aims to help the borough's residents get the most out of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sutton has a wealth of former and potential Olympians and Paralympians, with ten athletes who have a great chance of making Team GB in 2012. Among those aiming for glory are ex-Nonsuch High School pupil and cyclist Joanna Rowsell, tennis player Anna Smith who trains at Sutton Tennis Academy, and Wallington resident and wheelchair athlete David Weir, who has just returned from the Paralympic World Championships in New Zealand where he won three gold medals.
As well as showcasing our talented athletes, Team Sutton is helping local people to benefit from the Games, particularly by encouraging young people to take up and enjoy sport and helping Sutton's sports clubs and organisations get ready to cope with increased demand around 2012.
Cllr Simon Wales, Executive Member for Communities, Transport and Voluntary Sector, said "London 2012 will be a once in a lifetime chance to see the Olympic and Paralympic Games come to our home city. As well as the chance to see the Games live, this brings opportunities for residents, schools and businesses to get more involved in sport and volunteering.
"Team Sutton is being launched to help everyone in Sutton to make the most of these opportunities, so if you're interested in getting involved or in helping other people to do so then come and join us at the launch to find out more."
The launch will take place on Tuesday 15 March at 6.30pm in meeting room 1, Sutton Civic Offices and is open to everyone.
Between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, attendees will be given an overview of what Team Sutton have been doing and what their future plans are, as well as an update on plans for 2012 across south London.
There will be a question and answer session with local former Olympian Bob Wells, who won Bronze in super heavyweight boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. There will also be the launch of Sutton's Celebrating Achievement Awards 2011 which recognise contributions to sport in Sutton over the past 12 months.
From 7.45pm, there will be the opportunity for sports clubs to take part in workshops, including Planning for 2012 and Sutton's Club Support programme . Refreshments will be served.
