Weekly bin collection set to stay 27.03.12
Weekly waste collections are set to stay in Sutton, as changes to collection times come into force next month.
From Monday 16 April some residents will need to put their bins out on a different day, as new working patterns help the council to save £1 million from the waste collection budget.
The service needs to save the money as part of the council's Smarter Services Review. During a consultation with residents last year, several options were suggested, including moving to fortnightly waste collections and either charging for or removing free garden waste pick-ups. But people said they valued their weekly bin collection and free garden waste collections, so the council looked at other ways of saving money while protecting these services.
By extending collection routes to run in the morning, afternoon and on Saturdays, the council can save £500,000 without cutting collections, introducing extra charges or laying off staff.
Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change on Sutton Council, said: "Our residents told us that weekly waste collections were a priority for them, so we have found an innovative way of protecting front line services while still cutting costs.
"There are lots of ways of checking if the changes will affect you, so look out for our colour-coded maps on waste collection trucks and the council's website, in the Council Tax booklet and in Sutton Scene. We'll be bringing the information to you with leaflets, bin notices and calendars with all of your collection dates. Plus, you can listen out for our ads on Radio Jackie or join the conversation on Twitter"
Bin collections on Monday to Friday will start at 6am and finish by 8.30pm and Saturday collections will run from 7am to 2.45pm. Green bins and garden waste will be collected on the same day as brown wheeled bins, and will continue to be fortnightly. Garden waste collections start from Monday 16 April 2012, and continue until 20 December.
To find out if you will be affected by the changes, look out for the colour coded map on bin trucks, or check Sutton Scene or your council tax booklet. In the week before the change, you will receive leaflets and calendars through your letterbox and a notice stuck on to your bin. You can also put your postcode into the 'my local services' map on the council website online or on your mobile, or look at www.sutton.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling.
