The race is on to find Sutton's sporting heroes 19.04.12
With just 100 days to go until the London Olympics, Sutton Council is on the look-out for home-grown sporting talent.
The council has teamed up with the Sutton Guardian and Sutton Sports Council to launch the 2012 Celebrating Sports Awards, and the race is on to nominate your local sporting hero.
Categories include team of the year and sportsperson of the year, but it is not all about sporting success. We also want to hear about inspirational sportspeople who deserve to be recognised by their local community.
Cllr Graham Tope, Executive Member for Community Safety, Leisure and Libraries at Sutton Council, said: "We've always known that Sutton is full of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We want to say a big well done and thank you to them, but we need your help.
"Do you know an inspirational sportsperson who deserves to be recognised? Perhaps they're achieving remarkable things against the odds, or giving up their free time to coach others. Whatever their story, we want to hear it, so please get nominating."
Last year's awards received dozens of nominations. Winners included Lauren Sullivan, a 14-year-old swimmer, who was crowned Sutton's disabled sportsperson of the year. Lauren is a member of Marcuda Swimming Club, and trains at Cheam Leisure Centre. She was presented with her trophy by another local hero, Bob Wells, who won a boxing bronze medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
This year's categories are: disabled sportsperson of the year, junior sportsperson of the year (under 18), club of the year, coach of the year, sports volunteer of the year, junior sports volunteer of the year (under 18), sporting primary school of the year, sporting secondary school of the year, senior team of the year, junior team of the year (under 18), sports teacher of the year (primary or secondary).
Nominations close on 1 June. Visit the Leisure, Arts, Libraries & Heritage pages at www.sutton.gov.uk or telephone Sutton Sports Development Team on 020 8770 4667 and ask for a nomination form.
