A new and easier way to claim benefits - 16.07.09
Say goodbye to lengthy and confusing housing benefit and council tax forms. A new electronic claim form is being launched on Wednesday 22 July which is quicker, easier and less hassle.
The recession has led to a big increase in the numbers of people claiming benefits in Sutton and the new system will make sure residents get all the money they are entitled to.
The new system means Housing Benefit advisors can now take claims over the phone – removing the need for completing complicated and lengthy forms.
The current Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claim process is extremely complicated and can prevent customers from claiming the benefits they need.
There are fewer questions on the new form and the claim process will be much quicker as a result. Delays in processing can have a big impact on the most vulnerable residents in Sutton and can lead to rent arrears, evictions, and put people off taking work because it affects their claim. Delays can also prevent access to housing as private sector Landlord's are reluctant to rent to benefit recipients.
More vulnerable residents will be offered a home visit to fill out their claim form.
Cllr John Drage, Executive Member for Resources said: "It is particularly important in the current economic climate that we help our residents in any way possible to claim the benefits they are entitled to. We are really simplifying the process so people get the help they need quickly and easily. The new electronic form, which can be filled in over the phone, will allow us to deal promptly and efficiently with customer claims and provide them with an even better service."
