Council Helps Families Through the Recession - 03.08.09
Local parents are accessing training and finding work through a range of projects led by Sutton Council's Extended Services and Early Years team.
One of the projects helping parents into work or training is the 'Into Recruitment Project' which offers parents one to one support and employability workshops. Since April 2009, over 70 parents have registered and are now receiving help and advice on finding employment.
Nicola Arnold is one such example. Nicola, a mother of three, recently attended employability workshops at Beddington Park Children's Centre and received help on filling in application forms and interview techniques. She is now about to start a part time job working for the London Borough of Sutton as a Craft and Party Organiser.
Nicola said: "The staff were brilliant and they really put me at ease. I'm usually nervous about interviews but this time I didn't feel nervous at all."
These workshops are co-ordinated by the Extended Services and Early Years team and run in partnership with Carshalton College. Additional projects are running in Children's Centres in partnership with SCOLA. In September, Manor Park Children's Centre will be hosting, "Crunch the Credit Crunch" a series of financial capability workshops for parents who wish to know more about how to maximise their income, deal with debt and budget for the future.
Cllr Tony Brett Young, Executive Member for Young People said: "We want to help parents through the recession. There is a lot of help available locally and free of charge for parents to get back into work or training. I hope as many parents as possible sign up and get the help they need."
