Claim Your Rate Relief - 07.08.09

As part of its ten point economic recovery plan, Sutton Council is helping small businesses in the borough claim thousands of pounds of cash back from their business rates.

£365,000 in business rates since the campaign started. Sutton was one of the first boroughs to set out a plan for action to deal with the recession. The Ten Point Plan was launched in November 2008 and was an immediate response to residents and businesses' needs. Last month, we announced a wide-ranging second wave of projects to support local businesses and residents to follow up on the success of the ten point plan. The projects aim to make sure Sutton is well placed to make a swift economic recovery and include procurement events to encourage more business locally as well as workshops and seminars to support business growth.

Firms of a certain size are able to claim Small Business Rate Relief and thanks to a council campaign over 1,330 small businesses in the borough are now claiming this help. Small businesses in Sutton have claimed back £365,000 in business rates since the campaign started.

Businesses which have properties with a rateable value less than £21,500 could be entitled to a saving of up to 50%. This means 80% of businesses in Sutton can qualify for this help.

The successful scheme is part of our ten-point economic recovery plan of no-nonsense measures to help local businesses and residents through the recession.
