Council Clampdown on misuse of disabled badges - 18.11.09

A Cheam woman has been convicted of fraud after she was caught using a blue disabled parking badge belonging to her deceased father.

Mrs Pauline Tanner pleaded guilty to using a disabled badge which had expired and altering the date on it. Mrs Tanner would drive her father around in her car before he died in January 2005.

Mrs Tanner's car was parked on Dorking High Street when the badge was spotted by a Civil Enforcement Officer. The original badge had been issued by the London Borough of Sutton and should have been returned to the council upon the death of her father.

The case was heard on Wednesday 11 November 2009 at Sutton Magistrates Court, when Mrs Tanner pleaded guilty. She was sentenced to 80 hours of community service and ordered to pay legal costs.

Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for the Environment said: "We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who abuses the system in this way. Misuse of a blue badge is a serious criminal offence and we will not tolerate people who abuse and defraud the system which is designed to help people with disabilities."
