Five of the best for Smarter Travel Sutton - 30.11.09

The pioneering Smarter Travel Sutton project picked up its fifth major industry award of the year last week.

It was named Marketing Campaign of the Year at the ACT Travelwise awards in Newcastle, which recognise the organisations leading the way to change travel behaviour in the UK. The project was also Highly Commended in the Commuter Friendly Workplace of the Year and Travel Planner of the Year categories.

Smarter Travel Sutton, a three-year partnership between Sutton Council and Transport for London (TfL), has cut car trips and led to big increases in cycling and public transport use in the borough.

The project picked up a European CIVITAS award last month recognising Sutton as one of just three outstanding towns and cities across Europe for promoting greener travel.

Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment on Sutton Council, said:

"This is another tremendous result and a tribute to all the residents, schools and businesses who have backed Smarter Travel Sutton and shared our vision to change the way they travel around the borough.

"But we are not resting on our laurels. There's a lot more to come too.

"We are now talking to residents about a major transport project in Wallington, and others will follow in other town and district centres, that will make walking, cycling and public transport the best way to travel around the borough."
