Council announces £500,000 pothole repair fund 22.1.10
Sutton Council has announced a £500,000 emergency fund to repair extensive damage caused to the borough's road network during the cold snap.
This money will support the council's annual budget for road repairs making around £3m available to fix potholes and repair and protect the highways.
Residents are also being urged to report potholes and damaged roads to the council to help highways inspectors identify which roads need repairing and get them fixed as soon as possible. A special email address has been set up for reporting potholes or the public can ring the council's contact centre.
The special reserve fund was announced at the council's Executive Committee this week (18 Jan).
After the snow in February 2009 there was significant damage to roads and footpaths resulting in costs of around £250,000 and early inspections have indicated even more damage this year.
The road repairs team have doubled their staff numbers to cope with the additional work and they are already out inspecting roads and responding to reports of potholes and problems with the highways.
With over 400km of roads in the borough, temporary repairs will make the roads safe before re-filling and surfacing works can take place.
Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment on Sutton Council, said: "With some of the worst weather in over 30 years our roads have suffered a great deal of frost damage.
"Our pledge of half a million pounds in emergency funding will see vital repairs take place to bring the highways back up to standard and I encourage residents to let us know if they find potholes in their area".
Residents can help the council by reporting damaged roads and potholes either by contacting the call centre 020 8770 5070 or emailing the council on email@example.com. People are asked to include the nearest house number or business premises to the area of damage to help us identify where action is needed.
