Sutton football club to compete for a place at Wembley 16.02.10
St. Mary's Junior School Football Club in Carshalton has won the English Schools Football Association seven-a-side Surrey finals and could now go on to play in the national tournament at Wembley Stadium.
Following an amazing season, which culminated in St. Mary's under-elevens topping a 25 team league in Sutton, they qualified for the all-Surrey tournament. Their victory in Surrey has now booked them a place at the South East Regional finals which are due to take place in Greenwich in March, the winner of which will go on to play in the national tournament at Wembley Stadium.
St Mary's Junior School PE Coordinator, Nicky Corby, said: "The success of the team is as much down to their talent as it is to the dedication of the boys and their coach Matt Birch. Playing at Wembley would be a great experience for the team, but no matter what happens at the tournament in March, we are already very proud of what they have achieved."
Cllr Tony Brett Young, Executive Member for Children on Sutton Council, said: "I think a big congratulations is in order for the whole team. I'm very proud that a team from Sutton will be representing the area and may even get the honour of competing at Wembley.
"St. Mary's Junior School has done a wonderful job in producing such a dedicated and successful team."
