Don't miss out on your chance to vote 19.02.10
A reminder to residents to make sure they are registered to vote for local elections in May, and potentially a General Election too, has been issued by Sutton Council.
Only those residents included on the borough's electoral register – also known as the electoral roll – will be able to vote in council elections on 6 May. A General Election may also be called on the same day and again only those on the register can vote.
The council sends registration forms to residents across the borough every autumn to compile the annual electoral register. Some residents fail to fill in or return them and as they are not on the register, could miss out on the chance to vote. This also applies to people who have recently moved to the borough.
However, people can request to be added to the register throughout the year.
Your credit rating may also be affected if you are not on the electoral register as it is often used by credit agencies when you apply for mortgages or other financial services.
The deadline for adding your name and being eligible to vote in May is Tuesday 20 April. Residents can either download a form from the council website or call and ask for one to be posted to them.
On 6 May polling stations will open across Sutton giving residents the chance to vote for who they want to represent them on Sutton Council for the next four years.
Paul Martin is the Chief Executive of Sutton Council and also the borough's Returning Officer. He said:
"The right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights we all enjoy in the UK. It's your chance to have a direct say in who governs you, both locally and nationally.
"Most residents will have filled out and returned the registration forms we sent out to homes in the autumn, so do not have to worry.
"For those who have not, it takes just a few minutes to complete the form, post it back to us and ensure you can make your mark on polling day. Don't miss out."
To be eligible to vote in local authority elections on 6 May you must be a Sutton resident, aged 18 or over and included on the borough's electoral register
You must also be either: a British citizen; a qualifying Commonwealth citizen; a citizen of the European Union or the Irish Republic.
