Council answers parents' SOS after nursery fire 07.06.10
Sutton Council is to help parents find new childcare arrangements after a nursery was burnt down in a suspected arson attack.
The fire broke out in the Sutton Common Recreation Ground Pavilion on Sutton Common Road on Friday night. No one was injured but the blaze destroyed the nursery, Taz's Pre-School at the Pavilion.
Two male youths, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Although the nursery is a private business leasing council premises, the authority has assured parents it will assist them with finding alternative childcare arrangements.
Cllr Dave Callaghan, Executive Member for Children, Families and Youth Services on Sutton Council, said: "Although Taz's pre-school is a private nursery, we are offering as much assistance as we can following the fire and our Family Information Service is already on hand helping parents track down alternative childcare as quickly as possible until a replacement building can be found.
"Parents affected who have not yet been in touch should contact the Family Information Service on 020 8770 6000."
The owner of the pre-school, which opened in 2006 and has places for 20 children, will be offered business support and help finding alternative premises.
Ward councillors, including Miguel Javelot and Adrian Davey, took a leading role in dealing with the aftermath of the blaze.
They ensured the wrecked building was safely fenced off and that all parents were notified of the incident.
Cllr Callaghan added: "I would really like to thank the ward councillors who were on site over the weekend ensuring that the building was made safe and parents were informed. I'd also like to thank the firefighters and police for all their efforts."
