Following consultation with several schools, Sutton Council has agreed to open two additional classes, one at Barrow Hedges Primary School, the other at Brookfield Primary School. They will both open in September 2010 to accommodate the exceptional number of applications for new school admissions this year.

This will make 60 more places available for children joining the reception year in the autumn term.

These two new classes are additional to the new building at Hackbridge Primary which also opens in 2010 and gives 30 more places for local children.

Cllr Kirsty Jerome, Executive Member for Education and Schools at Sutton Council, said: "Sutton schools are among the best in the country they are becoming increasingly popular.

"We are very grateful for the positive support from the headteachers and governors at Barrow Hedges Primary and Brookfield Primary for agreeing to take additional children by setting up an extra class at their schools. This means more places will be available in September to meet the unexpectedly high levels of demand for places for children starting school for the first time.

"In line with an increase in the birth rate we predicted the need for 30 more places this autumn and built a new class at Hackbridge Primary in preparation. However the number of applications was even greater than expected which, as well as an increase in the popularity of our schools, could be down to the recession and fewer parents choosing sending their children to private schools.

"As more and more people decide to send their children to Sutton schools we will be continuing to ask the Government for a fairer and more timely allocation of the capital funding we vitally need if we are to be able to ensure that we can provide sufficient places in our schools to meet the needs of local children and families."

In the longer term, the Council's Executive decided at the meeting on 7 June to confirm the permanent expansion of Hackbridge Primary from 60 to 90 places from September 2010 and to publish statutory proposals in respect of permanent expansions at further five schools from September 2011. The schools concerned are Barrow Hedges, Beddington Park, Devonshire, Dorchester and Muschamp Primary Schools. Overall, these proposals would ensure a further 180 places per year for reception aged children.
