What is dementia?

Dementia covers lots of different conditions that can affect the brain as we get older. The most common symptoms are memory loss and confusion which make it more difficult to look after yourself. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease.

Support at home

Developing memory problems, or finding that you are developing dementia, can be a frightening thing but it does not mean that you will have to give up all of your independence. Support and equipment can be provided to help you stay living at home, independently with a good quality of life for as long as possible.

Support from the Council

If you are having difficulty in managing day to day tasks due to dementia then we may be able to provide support. Start by asking for assessment of your needs.

Local and national support:

  • Age UK runs local services and has activities at local centres to help people stay active and part of the community

  • The Alzheimer's Society works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia and has an office in Sutton

  • Sutton Uplift is a free NHS mental health and wellbeing service, providing support and sign-posting local residents to the most appropriate mental health care, tailored to individual needs

  • Dementia Action Alliance - we're a member of the Dementia Action Alliance and recognise the role we have in making Sutton a dementia friendly community

  • Together For Sutton provides professional, confidential information, advice, support and advocacy to residents in the London Borough of Sutton.The service was launched in July 2022 and replaces the ALP's (Advice Links Partnership) service.
