Initial Feasibility Studies – Belmont and Rosehill

In November 2014, the Local Authority (LA) identified two potential sites for new secondary school provision;

(i) The 'Sutton Hospital Site' and

(ii) 'The Rosehill Recreation Ground Site'

In order to understand the potential of these sites, the LA commissioned feasibility studies to assess their suitability for an 8FE school (approx. 1575 pupils) in more detail. These reports are lengthy and technical in nature. The studies do not represent 'final solutions' and do not indicate a preference for one site or the other.

Since their publication, the political administration of the Council has announced that the Sutton Hospital site will be the first site for new secondary school provision in the Borough as it is the only suitable site in the Council’s ownership in a brownfield location. The Rosehill site is in an area of Metropolitan Open Land and as such would not be appropriate for development unless it can be demonstrated that all brownfield sites have been exhausted.

Greenshaw Learning Trust were approved by the Department for Education to open a secondary free school in Sutton in March 2015, however after careful consideration they have decided not to pursue the Hospital site given their concerns about the constraints of the site in relation to the proposed size of the school. Given the level of interest in the Sutton Hospital site, a new free school provider is expected to be identified next year subject to approvals by the Department for Education.
