Tomorrow is World Cancer Day. It is a day which is recognised worldwide as a day to raise awareness of the wonderful work being done to try and tackle this terrible disease and save lives.

As a cancer survivor myself, I am so grateful to everyone who is contributing to the brilliant work being done to beat cancer here in Sutton.

This year Sutton Council has decided to take the opportunity to mark World Cancer Day by combining it with the launch of our Sutton STEAMs Ahead event. We thought it would be a great way to show the link between science and the arts.

We will be showing a film we have made which brings together the two worlds of creativity and science to show how important the STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) are in the fight against cancer.

This short film combines the art of creative filmmaking, the technology of drone filming and the skill of depicting cancer cells using choreographed dance and movement. It involves local residents, some who have been affected by cancer, and is filmed in locations across Sutton.

As well as the film, we have lots of other exciting activities planned.

There will be live dance and shows from brilliant talented artists like Big Jest, Victor Films and the Gary Mason Charity. There will also be fun events including mixing scientific mocktails. It’s great that many of our local community groups will be involved too.

I am really excited for this launch -it starts at 3pm in The Attic, on the third floor of the St Nicholas Centre. I hope you are able to come along and I look forward to seeing you there.
