What happens to your recycling and waste?

The Beddington Energy Recovery Facility

We send all non-recyclable household waste to the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF). The ERF has been treating waste from households in Sutton since 2018. It replaced the Beddington landfill site which is now being restored into a nature reserve.

The Beddington ERF:

  • is a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to landfill

  • treats non-recyclable waste instead of burying it in the ground

  • produces around 26 megawatts of electricity each year, enough to power the facility itself and 55,000 homes

  • will deliver low-carbon supplies of hot water via the Sutton Decentralised Energy Network (SDEN) to 19,000 new homes and businesses

  • cuts carbon emission when compared to the previous landfill operation
