Sutton's Big Society

If you live in the area and want to know more, or get more involved in local life, there are tonnes of ways to do so. In Sutton the Big Society isn't something new or strange, it's about knowing what's going on, being able to have your say and getting involved in local life.

If you live in the area and want to know more, or get more involved in local life, there are tonnes of ways to do so. In Sutton the Big Society isn't something new or strange, it's about knowing what's going on, being able to have your say and getting involved in local life.

This can mean a serious, full time occupation like becoming a councillor or running a local volunteering group. It can be fun like running a Saturday morning kids football side or helping run a summer street party. Or it can be really easy like removing the ice from your driveway and checking on your neighbours.

Sutton has been involved in the Big Society since 19th July 2010 when the government announced that, along with three other local authorities, Sutton would show how the coalition's 'Big Society' idea can be brought to life. Sutton was chosen because it is regarded as having one of the country's most vibrant communities with a very active voluntary sector, plus a track record of devolving power to our neighbourhoods. This has made Sutton a place where people mostly know their neighbours and look after each other, whilst public services are run more cheaply.

We agreed to work with the government to show how to give:

1. communities a bigger say on neighbourhood planning

2. people influence for transport decisions

3. people a greater say in local health services

4. young people the opportunity to learn new life skills
