Crisis Loans and Grants

From 1st April 2013, the Welfare Reform Act 2012 transferred funding from the Department for Work and Pensions to Local Authorities for Community Care Grants and Crisis Loans. Local authorities were not required to use the funding to deliver a scheme, however here in Sutton we believe that we need to support our most vulnerable residents in times of need. The council's scheme is called Crisis Loans and Grants, and is voucher based (there is no cash alternative). It will only help residents in extreme hardship or crisis.

In December 2013 the DWP announced that it was cutting the funding to local authorities from 2015/16. To date there has been no change in this position and the council expects to lose £500k of funding in 2015/16. As a result there is a need to reduce the amount of money spent on funding and administering the Crisis Loan and Grant Scheme.

The council will continue to provide hardship support in the form of food and utility vouchers. Any award for furniture or white goods will be restricted to beds, fridges, fridge freezers and cookers. If a resident is re-settling into the community a broader range of furniture may be available on an individual basis. The links below provide detail on our scheme, eligibility criteria, how to apply, who we are working in partnership with, how we will use your information and links to useful organisations in the Borough that also support people in times of hardship.
