Out of School Childcare

What is Out of School Childcare? Out of school clubs provide care for children of school age outside of normal school hours to play, relax and socialise in groups.

Settings can offer care before and after school and all day during the school holidays (this will vary from one setting to another).

What services do they offer?

Breakfast Clubs run before school. Parents/carers drop the children off at the club and the club staff take the children to school. Breakfast is provided and children are offered a range of activities to participate in.

After School Clubs run straight after school. Some clubs will pick-up children from school and take them to the club. They offer children a range of fun activities including arts and crafts, sports, music and games. Some clubs may also offer a homework club.

Holiday Play schemes operate during the school holidays and will offer a programme of activities including arts and crafts, sports, music and drama, team games and outings.

What age group do they cater for?

Out of school care is for children aged 4 - 11 years.

Is Out of School Childcare registered?

All services that are provided by a school are inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) as part of the school's regular inspection.

Out of school clubs not run by a school, caring for children under eight years old for more than two hours per day and for more than five days per year are also registered and inspected by Ofsted. This means that the setting will be checked to ensure that staff are appropriately trained and qualified and that the premises are suitable and safe. All staff will be subject to an Enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check. The registration certificate must be prominently displayed at the setting.  To view the latest Ofsted report for a particular Out of School setting visit the Ofsted Website and select Inspection Reports.
