What is a pre-school? Pre-schools offer children the opportunity to play, learn and socialise in small groups.
Pre-schools are open term time only and sessions can be for between 2½ and 4 hours either mornings or afternoons.
What services do they offer?
Pre-schools offer a wide range of stimulating activities for children which are based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS is a framework for development, care and learning for children from birth to five years. Some of the activities that the children will be able to enjoy include arts and crafts, books and stories, sand and water play, outdoor play, music and singing.
What age group do they cater for?
Pre-schools provide places for children aged 2 - 5 years.
Are pre-schools registered?
If the pre-school runs for more than 2 hours a day it must be registered.
Pre-schools are registered with and inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). This means that the pre-school will be checked to ensure that staff are appropriately trained and qualified and that the premises are suitable and safe. All staff will be subject to an Enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check. The registration certificate must be prominently displayed at the pre-school. To view the latest Ofsted report for a particular Pre-school visit the Ofsted Website and select Inspection Reports.
Fees and conditions
Pre-schools fees will vary and will be dependent on the number of sessions your child attends.
All 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 15 hours of Free Early Learning and Care for 3 and 4 year olds! per week over 38 weeks. This entitlement can be taken in the private sector (private day nursery, pre-school or independent nursery class) or in the maintained sector (a local authority nursery class).
