The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a levy that local authorities can charge on new developments in their area. The money raised can be used for infrastructure provision that the council and communities want. The council’s CIL came into effect in April 2014.
Sutton’s Charging Schedule
The council has a borough-wide charge for residential uses of £100 per sqm and for ‘‘convenience’’ retail (i.e. day-to-day retail purchases) of £120 per sqm. This is set out in council’s Charging Schedule.
The Mayor’s Charging Schedule
The Mayor’s CIL charges £20 per sqm on all development in Sutton except for education and health uses.

Although CIL largely replaces planning obligations, for some infrastructure Planning Obligations (or Section 106 Agreements) are still required. This is set out in the council’s adopted Planning Obligations SPD.
