Who can register a death

COVID-19 Guidelines

Following government advice,  we are no longer open for face-to-face death registrations.  All deaths will now be registered by telephone.
Once we have received the medical cause of death certificate alongside next of kin details from the medical professionals, we will contact you to go through the registration process.
If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact a member of the team on 0208 770 6750.

If the death happened in a house or hospital, it can be registered by:

  • a relative
  • someone present at the death
  • an occupant of the house
  • an official from the hospital
  • the person making the arrangements with the funeral directors

Deaths that occurred anywhere else can be registered by:

  • a relative
  • someone present at the death
  • the person who found the body
  • the person in charge of the body
  • the person making the arrangements with the funeral directors

Most deaths are registered by a relative. The registrar would normally only allow other people to complete the registration if there are no relatives available.
