The London Borough of Sutton and Civil Ceremonies Ltd have co-operated to provide a service for those who would like to celebrate their commitment to each other and are unable, or who do not wish to, have a marriage ceremony.
Although these ceremonies have no legal status, their purpose is to provide a couple with the opportunity to make a life-long commitment to each other. Family and friends can share the occasion or the ceremony can be in private without guests.
A celebrant who has been approved by the London Borough of Sutton will take the ceremony. Its content will reflect the choices made by the couple from options chosen at the time of booking. If the celebrant is also a registrar they will not be acting in their statutory role as a registrar when they conduct your ceremony.
There are certain requirements which you need to meet and which the celebrant will check at the time of booking your ceremony:
- you must be 16 or over on the date of application. Anyone under the age of 18 must have written consent from parent(s) or legal guardian(s)
- you may not enter into a commitment ceremony if one or both of the partners is legally married to another partner. Where a previous marriage has been dissolved or otherwise ended evidence of this will be required at the time of the booking
- proof of age will be required in the form of a passport or birth certificate
Ceremonies may be held at Russettings, 25 Worcester Road, Sutton or licensed venues in the Borough.
