Crimestoppers is the only registered charity focused on reporting crime anonymously. The 0800 555 111 number allows the public to ring Crimestoppers and give information to the police with guaranteed anonymity about crime and criminal activity. A reward is also available for those whose information leads to arrest and charge.
It is a partnership between the media, police, businesses and the community dedicated to promoting the Crimestoppers free and anonymous phone call scheme and its benefits.
The scheme offers to the public a facility to contact the police through the free telephone number 0800 555 111 to give information on criminal activity, with the guarantee of complete anonymity.
Crimestoppers' success is largely due to its being a joint community venture. Its operation within the UK is managed on the basis of 29 regional Crimestoppers' boards, whose tasks are to administer the scheme and raise funds for publicity, promotion and rewards in their area.
The boards are supported by the Crimestoppers Trust which is a registered charity and the national umbrella organisation behind London Crimestoppers.
London Crimestoppers is run by a board drawn from business, the media, the community and the Metropolitan and City of London Police. Each member is a volunteer selected for his or her special skills covering a wide variety of disciplines necessary to enhance the undoubted success of the scheme.
As a result of this anonymous source of information from members of the public, over 25,000 arrests directly related to Crimestoppers have been made in the last ten years. In London alone arrests have increased by 70% in the last 12 months and 12 murders have been solved as a direct result.
