Keeping safe - out and about

Closed circuit television - CCTV

The first CCTV system in Sutton was established in August 1994 when 9 cameras were installed in the High Street. There are currently 85 permanently sited CCTV cameras within the borough of Sutton that are monitored from the joint CCTV/Police Integrated Borough Operations control room at Sutton Police Station. The fixed location cameras are supplemented by a further eight rapid deployment cameras. One camera is owned by the housing section and the other seven are owned by the Safer Sutton Partnership service and can be relocated as needs arise.

Prior to 1998 there was little specific legislation governing the installation or operational use of CCTV systems. That changed with the Data Protection Act 1998, which brought a potential personal criminal liability for breaches. Other statutory legislation followed.
