Council tax reduction

Disputes and appeals

If you do not understand or you disagree with a decision we have made about your entitlement to a Council Tax Reduction, you have one calendar month to contact us about that decision. You can ask us:

  • for an explanation of that decision or
  • to look at the decision again

Please email your request to counciltaxreduction@sutton.gov.uk

If you want the decision looked at again, you need to tell us why you think the entitlement is wrong and provide any information to support this.

If you are unhappy with our response, you have the right to dispute that decision by an appeal to the Valuation Tribunal, an independent body that has the power to review any reduction we award against the Council Tax charge levied on your home.

To begin this process you must first request a statement of reasons for the decision you wish to dispute. Once you have received that statement of reasons, you can then make an appeal directly to the Tribunal.

Further information about the Valuation Tribunal’s power to review and overturn the London Borough of Sutton’s decisions is available on the Tribunal’s website.
