Help with council tax
We want to reassure any residents who may be financially stretched as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. There are a number of local and national schemes in place to support you.
The Government has made new funding available to council’s to help provide support to residents who are experiencing hardship.
Local Council Tax Support
If you currently receive Local Council Tax Support, you will automatically have a £150 reduction applied to your 2020/21 council tax bill or if your bill is less than £150 then it will be reduced to zero.
The funding that is being used to apply this £150 discount for recipients of Council Tax Support has come from central Government, and they have asked us to distribute it to our council tax payers in this way.
We will send you a new bill in April (the original bills were sent out in early-mid March). Please do not pay your first council tax installment until you have received your new bill.
Help if you are struggling to make payments
For anyone experiencing difficulty in making payment, we can agree alternative arrangements with you. We will make arrangements with you that take account of your circumstances. This may include rescheduling or delaying payment.
If you wish to discuss your circumstances you should contact the Council Tax Team by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 8770 5000 and they will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
Support for those on low income
There are a number of other financial schemes available to support people who are in employment or self employed and who are struggling financially as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. These include the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Coronavirus Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.
Details of the further help available to residents facing short- or long-term financial difficulties in paying their council tax is available on our website. This includes how you can claim Universal Credit or Council Tax Reduction.
If your income has been affected by Covid-19 and you cannot pay the instalment due to be taken on 7 April 2020, your best course of action would be to cancel your direct debit instruction directly with your bank, then contact us later to set it up again before June 2020.
The Council will monitor all upcoming statements from the Government and update our advice accordingly.
