NHS COVID-19 App for businesses

Thank you for all your work to protect your customers and staff during COVID-19 and make your premises secure for residents and visitors. Your efforts in supporting our local economy are hugely appreciated.

NHS Test and Trace App

The law now requires businesses to collect personal information from all customers, staff and visitors to their premises under the Health Protection Regulations 2020.

To allow NHS Test and Trace to contact customers with advice should there be a COVID-19 outbreak, you need to:

  1. Display a unique QR code for customers with the new NHS COVID-19 app to scan as they enter your premises. You can download resources here.

  2. Keep a written record of customer personal details for customers who do not have or do not want to use the app. These must be stored securely and retained for 21 days.

  3. Refuse entry to individuals or groups who do not provide the relevant information by either of these two options.

It will be an offence if businesses fail to comply with these new regulations by:

  • not displaying the relevant QR code 

  • not requesting specific details from individuals or groups of people

  • not retaining the information securely 

  • not providing the details to the Government or a Public Health Officer as requested. 

Any business that does not meet these regulations could face a fixed penalty notice of £1,000 - and up to £4,000 for repeat offenders - or prosecution for these offences.
