Mayor – general information
Cllr Steve Cook - the current Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton
Councillor Steve Cook has been appointed the new Mayor of Sutton at the Council’s annual meeting.
Steve, 64, has lived in Sutton for almost 40 years with his wife Pauline, a former local headteacher. They have two sons who attended Wilson’s school in Wallington and have three grandchildren.
Steve was a film industry professional, working in sound and post production on feature films, TV drama and commercials in London and Los Angeles. After retiring in 2013, he became increasingly involved with the Wallington and Sutton communities.
In the June 2015 by-election, he was elected as Liberal Democrat councillor for Wallington South and has been an active member of the Children, Families and Education committee. He was Deputy Mayor in 2016/17. After the recent council elections in May 2018, Steve was returned as ward councillor for Wallington South.
He said: “To be elected to this important office is a great honour for me and my family. I am very much looking forward to representing the London Borough of Sutton and promoting its best interests.”
The Mayor’s two chosen charities for this year are the St Helier Kidney Fund and Home Start Sutton, a charity that supports families with young children.
At last night’s council meeting, Cllr Jayne McCoy placed on record the council’s grateful thanks to Cllr Jean Crossby for her service as Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton during the past municipal year, along with her deputy, Cllr Marlene Heron.
Councillor Chris Williams has been appointed as the new Deputy Mayor. Chris's career in teaching started in 1974. He was Deputy Headteacher at a school in Twickenham for 16 years. Married to Marion, he became active in Sutton's political life when he retired in 2014. In July 2016 he was elected as a Liberal Democrat for Carshalton Central, and re-elected in May 2018.
He said: "This will be a wonderful opportunity to have the privilege of meeting the many residents who in a multitude of ways contribute to the well-being of the borough."
