Sutton has been shortlisted to become the London Borough of Culture for 2023.

Sutton’s year of culture will host events inspired by the borough’s cultural heritage and the work of The London Cancer Hub, based in the borough.

The world’s eyes are turning to Sutton and the groundbreaking London Cancer Hub. The Hub’s story, and Sutton’s cultural heritage, will be at the heart of our celebrations. We will explore the connections between science, culture and everyday life. Activities and events throughout the year will encourage residents, especially school pupils, to engage with S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) subjects. We will develop creative responses to the world of science and particularly the work going on in Sutton today.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said: “To be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement and is testament to our ambitions for the borough.

“We have such an incredible history and rich cultural offer and we plan to celebrate these.

“Nearly 7,000 people have backed Sutton’s bid to become London Borough of Culture so far. I am proud of the success and hard work that has gone so far into our bid. I look forward to sharing with the rest of London our ambitious plans for how we will make culture matter more than ever in our borough.”

Sutton’s bid was created with the people of Sutton, to make a difference for the people of Sutton.

Residents will enjoy a celebration of the ground-breaking science fiction works of prolific novelist and former Sutton resident, HG Wells, whose most famous works include ‘War of the Worlds.’ A wide-ranging programme of environmentally-themed cultural activities will increase awareness and understanding, and create new opportunities to engage on these important issues.

The prestigious Borough of Culture initiative, set up by the Mayor of London, will award the winning borough £1.35 million to deliver an ambitious programme, placing culture at the heart of their communities and celebrating the unique character of local people and places.

Sutton joins Croydon, Greenwich, Hounslow, Lewisham, Haringey, Hammersmith and Fulham to compete for the title of London Borough of Culture for 2021 and 2023.

The winners for both years will be announced in January 2020.
